Terrapin Side Project #5: MONK'S REVENGE

It's official, Terrapin's next side project is delicious! We were able to get our hands on a bottle before its release (expected to be later next week) to taste the fruits of Spike's labor. The beer is described as a "Belgian IPA [that] has a malt bill of a Belgian Tripel and a hop bill of a Double IPA.

Let me say, for a first attempt at a Belgian style ale this beer delivers. Though the dry hopping is uncharacteristic of the Belgian Tripel style, it certainly gives the beer a nice American influence and is not just a gimmick. It has a great hazy bright yellow color with tight white lacing from the head. The aroma is great, big floral notes from the dry hopping with a hint of sweetness from the yeast. The first sip was great, crisp and fairly dry, not too sweet. The hops are not overwhelming but certainly present and you can get a taste for the 9.8% ABV adding body to the beer. As the beer warmed up a bit the hops gave way more to a touch of malty sweetness imparted from the Belgain yeast.

All in all I was very impressed by the taste, balance and how drinkable this beast is. It is delicate and somewhat reserved as a Belgain beer should be, not overwhelming like other double/imperial styles. I think I am going to have to get in on the pre-order as this one will sell out quick!

email me at beer@towerwinespirits.com if you want to join the pre-order for this great beer! Just leave your name, number of bottle you would like and which store at which you would like to pick them up (Piedmont or Buford Highway).

Cheers
