Sweetwater DP In-Stock!

IT'S HERE!!! Sweetwater DP (donkey Punch) 22oz bottles are in-stock and they are gorgeous. Each liquor store in ATL has been allotted only 10 cases so get it while you can. I am not sure if this will be the only shipment but as of now United distributing has none left. Each bottle is $5.79 at Tower Piedmont, Tower Buford is $5.99.

A little more about this beer, though it is billed as a barley wine it looks and drinks much more like a double IPA. 140 IBU's and 10.2% ABV, it packs a punch but is still surprisingly drinkable.

New Arrivals 4/22

Alright you beer fanatics, here is a quick rundown of what is new.

We have some rare treats for you. First up is the
STONE BREWING: SUBLIMELY SELF RIGHTEOUS ALE. This will be EXTREMELY limited so pick it up if you see it! This is their XI anniversary ale but it was such a hit they decided to brew it seasonally under its new name. This dark double IPA is delicious, just had one last night and it lives up to the hype. Also, their 2009 IMPERIAL RUSSIAN STOUT arrived. This one is in 22 oz. bottles as opposed to their 2008 I.R.S. in 12 oz bottles (which we still have as well).

Also we have several bottles of BLACK ALBERT left from STRUISE brewing. This Royal Belgian Stout is definitely one of the best Imperial Stouts around. And last but not least we just received CHIMAY GRAND RESERVE VINTAGE 2007 in magnums (1.5 liters) and the huge JeroBoam (3 Liter) bottles. Mouthwatering is the word that comes to mind....

Happy drinking~

New Beers of Worthy Mention

Alright, the deliveries are in and here is a quick rundown of what you should be drinking.

We have buffed up our
ROGUE XS SERIES and in addition to the IMPERIAL IPA, MORIMOTO IMPERIAL PILSNER, OLD CRUSTACEAN BARLEY WINE, and IMPERIAL STOUT, we just received the following new (to us) Rogue XS beers; IMPERIAL PORTER, IMPERIAL RED ALE, and YOUNGER'S SPECIAL BITTER. If you have tasted any of the XS series you know how awesome they are and if not, than you are missing something! (Old Crustacean is a must try!)

Also please note that coming in on Firday is
FRENCH BROAD BREWING CO. from Ashville, NC. These guys were at the classic city brew fest this past weekend and made quite a debut. Be on the look out for 13 REBELS ESB, WEE HEAVY-ER SCOTCH ALE, GATEWAY KOLSCH, ALBIER, and of course, RYE HOPPER.

Finally, some new MAGIC HAT BREWING CO. beers will be making their way in, such as their spring seasonal mixed 12 pack and their new summer seasonal WACKO in six packs. This beer is pretty wild, a portion of the fermentables is brewed with real beet sugar and it has a red color though it has a surprisingly light refreshing taste perfect for summer. Read a review of it HERE. As always, the artwork is kick ass as well.

Happy Drinking~

So here is the quick run down of what is going on in the store and what is expected to come out in the next week or two.

Here is the Big News. APRIL IS BELGIAN BEER MONTH AT TOWER! What does that mean to you? Well it means saving $1.00 off of our 750ml Belgian beers and $.50 off our 330ml bottles with your Tower card. This includes our Buford Highway store as well. We have greatly expanded our Belgain beer stock and have well over 100 types on our shelves. This also will include most North American Belgain style beers (Ommegang, Unibrou, Allagash, etc.) So head in Friday, I am in the store mon, tues, wed, fri and sat. and would be happy to point out some new Belgians that you haven't tried yet.

We also just got in 5 extra cases of MONK'S REVENGE so if you are still searching for some we got it! Also expect some RARE VOS from Ommegang this week. TRAPPIST ROCHEFORT 10 and 8 are back in stock but probably not for too long. BELL'S Should be in next week which will be insane so as soon as I know more I will relay it to you!

That is it for the time being but look for another update this week!

The Wednesday Update 3/18/09

Hi again everyone,

So the big news is that the Terrapin Side project, "MONK'S REVENGE" hit our shelves yesterday at our Piedmont store and today at our Buford Highway store. Needless to see supplies are extremely limited so get yours while you can! If you want to know what it tastes like then see my previous blog from last week.

So Wednesday is usually our big delivery day and that is when most of our new beers come in. I have two to mention to you this week. The first one is from Weihenstephaner and is called VITUS. It is a Weizenbock or basically a strong hefeweizen. It clocks in at 7.7% ABV and has the classic characteristics of the beer style. So, I am buying one tonight and will post some tasting notes on it later this week. Though I should mention there is quite a following for this beer and I ordered based on a recommendation from a customer/beeradvocate. Kudos to you UGADawgGuy! Thanks again for letting me know about this amazing brew.

The Second beer on the list is a new one from Avery called BRABANT, which is a wild ale aged in Zinfandel barrels. Again this is a beer I have not tried yet but it gets some pretty good reviews, check out this link: Brabant Review (ignore the first review). Anyway, if you are into wild ales this one is a must.

Finally there are a few odds and ends that also made their way into the store. FORT COLLIN'S BRWERY is now here and I must say they make a tasty red ale. Toasty, roasty with a great ruby red, I really enjoyed this one. We have 6 packs of their IPA, Red Ale and also a 12 pack sampler. Some other names you can look for in the store inlcude; DE STRUISE BROWERS (Belgian), DRIE FONTIENEN (Belgain), SAINT SOMEWHERE (US made Belgain Style beers), DIEU DU CIEL (makers of PECHE MORTEL, an amazing coffee Imp. Stout), and OLFABRIKKEN (Danish). These beers are amazing and highly recommended. I will do some more info on these rare Belgain treats in the future.

Unitl then, happy drinking!

Terrapin Side Project #5: MONK'S REVENGE

It's official, Terrapin's next side project is delicious! We were able to get our hands on a bottle before its release (expected to be later next week) to taste the fruits of Spike's labor. The beer is described as a "Belgian IPA [that] has a malt bill of a Belgian Tripel and a hop bill of a Double IPA.

Let me say, for a first attempt at a Belgian style ale this beer delivers. Though the dry hopping is uncharacteristic of the Belgian Tripel style, it certainly gives the beer a nice American influence and is not just a gimmick. It has a great hazy bright yellow color with tight white lacing from the head. The aroma is great, big floral notes from the dry hopping with a hint of sweetness from the yeast. The first sip was great, crisp and fairly dry, not too sweet. The hops are not overwhelming but certainly present and you can get a taste for the 9.8% ABV adding body to the beer. As the beer warmed up a bit the hops gave way more to a touch of malty sweetness imparted from the Belgain yeast.

All in all I was very impressed by the taste, balance and how drinkable this beast is. It is delicate and somewhat reserved as a Belgain beer should be, not overwhelming like other double/imperial styles. I think I am going to have to get in on the pre-order as this one will sell out quick!

email me at beer@towerwinespirits.com if you want to join the pre-order for this great beer! Just leave your name, number of bottle you would like and which store at which you would like to pick them up (Piedmont or Buford Highway).

Cheers

Recap the week and what's to come

Well lets get right to it and start with the Victory tasting last Wednesday.

It went off without a hitch and we had a great time sampling the Prima Pils, Hop Wallop, Storm King and Golden Monkey. Cameron from Victory Brewing did a great job introducing the beers and giving some background on the brewery. We were also fortunate to have Tina there from Savannah Distributors who puts Victory on our shelves around here. And of course the venue was awesome with How from Churchill's pub making everything happen seamlessly behind the scenes. Hop Wallop was the crowd favorite, narrowly beating out Golden Monkey by a vote. Be sure to pick up a six pack at Tower if you haven't tried it yet. We also Just received Golden Monkey in 750ml corked bottles and the look and taste awesome!

I have been eagerly awaiting the Smuttnose brewing Co. release down here and we received our first shipment last week. All I can say is Delicious! The IPA, Brown Ale, and Robust Porter all live up to the hype and are great balanced beers, something that can be hard to find these days. I picked up a variety pack which also includes the Shoals Pale Ale, my favorite of the bunch.

Be on the looks out for Brooklyn Local 2 to hit shelves this week, the Black Ops has come and gone and unfortunately our supply was diverted to Athens. If you are looking for some make the drive!

Too Much of a Hoppy Thing?

This is something that has been discussed before but I thought I would add my opinion and encourage yours. Americans have been known in the craft beer world as innovators and extremists, especially when using the hop. Examples are abound in Double IPA's, Hoppier Imperial Stouts, Brown Ales, Double Whites, etc.

I will admit I am a definite hop head but I have found that my initial love with these styles has begun to fizzle a bit. Even with the "regular" American IPA, I am finding a lack of balance and drinkability. My remedy to this problem has been to turn to English beers which are more restrained and balanced making them much more drinkable when having more then one or two. Some great examples of beers with a good hop flavor but also well balanced are Wychwood's Wychcraft Blonde Ale, St. Peter's IPA and Fuller's London Pride or ESB. American versions can be found in Shipyard's IPA (they use all English ingredients) and Southampton's IPA.

I have discussed this recently with my homebrewing partner as I have been searching for a good "session" beer (a beer that can be drank all day) and have had a hard time finding a good American example available in GA. As more hops are added to a beer generally the alcohol also increases to balance it out, making more difficult to enjoy more than a few without feeling the effects. So if anyone knows of any good beers 4.5% ABV or lower with a good flavor and balance post your thoughts! And also take this weeks poll of whether you like the hoppier beers or are getting burnt out on them

~Cheers
